Peculiar launch party and open mic – Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 @ 7pm

Rock Canyon Poets and Pioneer Book are pleased to host the second issue of a queer literary journal, peculiar, will have its official launch night at Pioneer Book on February 9^th at 7:00 PM. Select contributors to the journal will read their poetry and prose, including this issue’s Featured Writer: Spencer Ballard. An open mic will follow and copies of the journal will be available to the public for purchase. Make sure to arrive early for a good seat!

A new issue of peculiar will now be published every winter and summer, different from the initial plan of spring/fall. The first issue was completed in May 2015 with funding from a small Kickstarter campaign. Volume 2, Issue 1 is 107 pages long and features a collection of poetry, short stories, art, and photography from 26 queer Utah writers and artists.

Community Poem from the Provo Pride Festival

untitled (5) Back in September, at the Provo Pride Festival, peculiar shared a booth with Rock Canyon Poets where copies of both peculiar and Orogeny were sold. There was also an easel set up with paper and marker for Provo Pride attendees to add a line to a community poem. That community poem has since been published in Rock Canyon Poets’ newest chapbook, Inspired, under the title “Kaleidoscope.”

The chapbook was the result of a series of workshops, sponsored in part by Utah Humanities and Pioneer Book, where participants were asked to write a poem in response to another poem or literary work that inspired them. Rock Canyon Poets recently had a launch party and poetry reading to celebrate Inspired‘s release, covered by KBYU. Copies can be purchased online for only $5.

Utah Cultural Alliance

The Rock Canyon Poets and Pioneer Book, in participation with the Utah Humanities Book Festival, announces the release party of ?Inspired,? a community poetry writing experience and open mic on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 6:00 pm.

?Inspired? is a printed anthology of local Utah poets who recently participated in a free community workshop. Poets contribute a response poem inspired by a favorite poet or author. Each contributing poet receives a free copy and additional copies will be available to the public for $5 at the event. Poets will read their work from the anthology, after which, the open mic will begin and audience members are invited to read a poem they have written or a favorite by another poet. Light refreshments will be served.

Inspired: A FREE Community Poetry Writing Workshop

INSPIRED

Is there a literary work so powerful that it moves you to write, but you just don’t know where to start? A free community poetry writing workshop entitled “inspired” helps participants create a new poem as a response to a literary work (poem, book, or other) that inspires them. Offered in participation with the Utah Humanities Book Festival by Rock Canyon Poets and Pioneer Book, this workshop will be presented in two sessions, followed by a reception and poetry reading. Participants will be encouraged to submit their poem to be included in a printed anthology and contributors will receive a free copy.

What to Bring

Two printed copies of the poem or prose excerpt of the writer/poet you are inspired by. Prose excerpts should be 1 – 2 pages.
Pen and paper to write and/or an electronic device to write on (laptop, etc)
Drink/snack if you so desire
