Utah High School Poetry Slam State Championship–Fri. April 20, 2018 at Copper Hills HS

This year’s event, which will be part of the 4th Annual Grizzly Invitational, the Utah High School Poetry Slam State Championship, will feature writing workshops from well-known poets and spoken-word artists Ashlee Haze, Good Ghost Bill, and Olivia Gatwood. These exceptional writers have toured both the country and the world sharing their art as poets and educators.

During the evening, starting at 5 p.m., Copper Hills Slam will be hosting the 4th Annual Grizzly Invitational, a multi-school poetry slam competition. Hosted by local poet Debbie Higham Wood, and judged by both the Rock Canyon Poets & Wasatch Wordsmiths, the competition will feature eight schools, four rounds of performance poetry, and 32 talented, teen poets battling for the title of Grizzly Slam Champions. The slam event will also include short features in between rounds by our visiting poets.

Salt Lake Acting Company presents Stag’s Leap by Sharon Olds – including book signing!

Join us for this two week special engagement of STAG’S LEAP by Sharon Olds. Derived from Olds’ Pulitzer Prize winning book of poetry by the same title, Salt Lake Acting Company’s staged version is conceived and directed by Nancy Borgenicht. STAG’S LEAP blends Olds’ gift for language with Borgenicht’s theatrical imagination to create an evening of poetry not just out loud, but lived in. This two-week engagement serves as the next step in this project’s continued development, with all proceeds going toward SLAC’s new play programs.

Sharon Olds will attend the opening weekend with a special book signing following the matinee performance on January 21 (approximately 2:30pm). Don’t miss this chance to meet well known and loved poet Sharon Olds!

Sharon Olds was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University and Columbia University. Her first book, Satan Says (1980), received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Her second, The Dead and the Livingwas both the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983 and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Father was short-listed for the T. S. Eliot Prize in England, and The Unswept Room was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and helped to found the NYU workshop program for residents of Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island, and for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. She lives in New Hampshire and in New York City.

Open Mic Poetry Reading – Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 at Pioneer Book

RCP logo 1Join the Rock Canyon Poets for an evening of poetry. Not just any poetry—we want poetry that aches to be published, poetry that pushes the boundaries of the page, poetry that doesn’t need a performance, poetry that simply needs to be read. Bring your words in all of poetry’s traditional forms (from the sonnet to free verse) or just bring your ears for listening.

These events are very casual and social. If you’d like to RSVP, add your name in a comment below, or email rockcanyonpoets@gmail.com. Each poet may read for up to 5 minutes. Maximum of 9 poets per reading. If there is time remaining, poets in the audience will have an opportunity to read.
