Utah Arts Festival – Wasatch IronPen Literary Competition

15th Wasatch IronPen Writing Marathon, in which artists of the written word face off in a 24-hour writing competition! Adult and Youth writers of all experience levels can participate in one of three genres (Fiction, Non-fiction or Poetry) or can take on the IronPen Ultra and write in all three!

Writers of all experience levels can register for the marathon at the SLCC Community Writing Center (located at Library Square, Suite 8) or register online. Participants must register by Friday, June 24th, at 6:00 p.m. Registration for the IronPen is $10 for one genre (Fiction, Non-fiction, or Poetry) or $15 for the IronPen Ultra (all three genres).

After receiving the prompt on Friday, June 24th at 6:00 p.m., writers will have exactly 24 hours to write. Submissions are due Saturday, June 25th at 6:00 p.m. Visit CWC website or call 801-957-2192 for more details.

  • Garden Poetry Walk – Red Butte Garden from April 1 – May 31, celebrates this unique literary art by hosting the poems written by our eleven local poetry contest winners in stand-up display boxes placed throughout the Garden. Look for them along your path. We feature other seasonal poems throughout the year. Info on this year’s contest below.
  • Katharine Coles | (Solve for) X poetry reading at The King’s English Bookshop, Thursday, June 2, 2022 – 5:30pm to 7:00pm
  • S’more Poetry is a new poetry slam event the first Friday of every month at 7pm at 213 S 1200 E in Provo in the backyard. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on and you can sign up to perform via Instagram or Facebook.

  • Andrea Gibson at Metro Music Hall, Tuesday, November 1, 2022, 7:00PM MDT – Andrea Gibson is an American poet and activist from Calais, Maine, who has lived in Boulder, Colorado since 1999. Their poetry focuses on gender norms, politics, social reform, and the struggles LGBTQ people face in today’s society.

Antelope Island Spider Fest 2019 – a day full of spider-themed presentations, crafts, guided walks, citizen science, poetry, photography, art and food vendors, and more to learn about these fascinating residents of Antelope Island. Exploring Writing And Book Forms2-Part Workshop
August 6 & 13 (Tuesday), 6-8 pm.
Let’s play with the possibilities of writing paired with bookmaking. In this 2-part workshop, we’ll explore how the meaning of a piece of writing can be deepened by its physical form. We’ll play with new ways of presenting texts, learn how to make a number of simple but exciting book forms, and workshop your writing.

Everybody Writes Open MicWednesday, August 14 from 7 – 8pm in the main Salt Lake City Library on the 2nd floor. Bring any writing you want to share & listen to local writers and performers share their work.

Art on the TrailsSaturday, Aug. 24th between 3 pm – 6 pm (sign up for tours between 3 pm – 5:00 pm HERE). Pop-up creative performances on the trail that include: Hip Hop, Ballet, Poetry, Jazz, Bluegrass, Spanish Guitar, a Drum-line, and more! The Quills Conference – August 22 – 24, 2019 at the Marriott University Park Hotel. This three-day event is packed with presentations and panels on poetry, prose and screenwriting. Conference ticket options can include meals where keynote addresses can be heard or skip the meals and eat on your own to save on costs.

Western Musician Brenn Hill and Cowboy Poet Andy Nelson will perform in concert at 7 p.m. July 16, 2019 at Ogden Union Station, 2501 Wall Ave. in Ogden. Back by popular demand, the Poetry Slam competitions are back with team and indie slams and expand to include a high school slam featuring winners of the Utah State High School Championship.

Women Who Rock Day

New this year, we’re hosting Women Who Rock Day on Friday at the Big Mouth Stage, featuring several women performers, including poet Star Coulbrooke, authors Nan Seymour and Beatrice Washburn, cowboy poets JoLynne Kirkwood and Sam DeLeuuw, and storyteller Lynn Wing.

Cowboy Poets

Some of the state’s most well-known and loved cowboy poets, including C.R. Wood who is considered the patriarch of cowboy poetry in many circles, Sam DeLeeuw, and more. Plus, be sure to catch 15-year-old cowboy poet, Thatch Elmer.

WordFest in the Kids Art Yard

Insects love poetry! Come learn how to write a short poem about your favorite bug and display it in the Kids Art Yard. Ladybugs and spiders, bees and centipedes, oh my! 1:00 – 4:00pm each day of the festival courtesy of Rock Canyon Poets.

2019 UTSPS April Awards Festival – UTSPS will hold our 2019 April Awards Festival on Friday & Saturday April 12-13 at the Provo Courtyard by Marriott, 1600 N. Freedom Blvd (200 W), Provo, UT 84604. The festival will start in the late afternoon on Friday and conclude late afternoon on Saturday. The Poetry of Field Journals Workshop Series – Natural History Museum of Utah invites you to discover the beauty and poetry of field journals in this four-part series. 2019 Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize – Honoring the memory of a celebrated poet and a beloved teacher, the Agha Shahid Ali Prize in Poetry is awarded annually and is sponsored by The University of Utah Press and The University of Utah Department of English. $1,000 Cash Prize and Publication; Reading in The University of Utah’s Guest Writers Series. Deadline for manuscripts 48 – 100 pages is April 15, 2019.

Quarterly West – open for submissions until April 30, 2019.

Utah Life Magazine – The theme for the July/August 2019 issue is “Independence,” and the deadline is May 1, 2019. 

7th Annual Sor Juana Prize for Poems and Short Stories in Spanish – $100 in cash prizes will be awarded for two poems and two short stories written in Spanish in two categories (8 prizes in total). Deadline is May 20, 2019.
