Poetry Happens – Utah August 2019 events and calls

Welcome to the Utah monthly edition of Poetry Happens, brought to you by Rock Canyon Poets. Each edition will include poetry happenings and other announcements coming up in Utah, with highlights specifically for Utah county. And tune in on KRCL Radioactive the first Wednesday of every month for announcements and feature poet reading!


UPCOMING EVENTS for Utah County

Rock Canyon Poets poetry reading & open mic every 2nd Tuesday at Pioneer Book in Provo, this month the feature poet is Kara van de Graff! on August 13, 2019 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm.

Saturday Night Slam Series, check their Facebook page for monthly dates, from 7 – 9 PM at the BYU Wilkinson Student Center in Provo

Every Thursday – Speak for Yourself spoken word open mic at Enliten Cafe in Provo, at 7:30 pm

Salty Pond Poets meets at the SLCC Community Writing Center
on the 1st and 3rd Mondays, from 6:30-8 p.m.

Sugar Slam for this month features Janae Godfrey! every 2nd Thursday at Watchtower Cafe in SLC at 8 PM.

Helicon West open mic for poets and writers, summer edition! This month, Thursday, July 25, from 7 – 9 PM at Logan Library.

Salt City Slam – last Monday of every month at 8:00 pm at Vertical Diner in Salt Lake City.

Events this Month

Antelope Island Spider Fest 2019 – a day full of spider-themed presentations, crafts, guided walks, citizen science, poetry, photography, art and food vendors, and more to learn about these fascinating residents of Antelope Island. Activities start on August 3 at 10am and go until 4pm. No registration required. Park entrance fees apply.

Exploring Writing And Book Forms2-Part Workshop
August 6 & 13 (Tuesday), 6-8 pm.
Let’s play with the possibilities of writing paired with bookmaking. In this 2-part workshop, we’ll explore how the meaning of a piece of writing can be deepened by its physical form. We’ll play with new ways of presenting texts, learn how to make a number of simple but exciting book forms, and workshop your writing.

Everybody Writes Open MicWednesday, August 14 from 7 – 8pm in the main Salt Lake City Library on the 2nd floor. Bring any writing you want to share & listen to local writers and performers share their work.

Art on the TrailsSaturday, Aug. 24th between 3 pm – 6 pm (sign up for tours between 3 pm – 5:00 pm HERE). Pop-up creative performances on the trail that include: Hip Hop, Ballet, Poetry, Jazz, Bluegrass, Spanish Guitar, a Drum-line, and more! McLeod Creek Trail between Copper Moose Farm and Temple Har Shalom in Park City. The tour begins at Copper Moose Farm at 1285 Old Ranch Rd, Park City, UT 84098. Click here for Directions. 

The Quills Conference – August 22 – 24, 2019 at the Marriott University Park Hotel. This three-day event is packed with presentations and panels on poetry, prose and screenwriting. Conference ticket options can include meals where keynote addresses can be heard or skip the meals and eat on your own to save on costs.

CALLS FOR POEMS (Utah-based)

Provo Poetry POEMBALL Machine – Send in up to 10 short poems to be included in the POEMBALL Machines in Provo and SLC. Open to submissions year-round

Utah Life Magazine – The theme for the September/October 2019 issue is “Harvest,” and the deadline is Aug. 6. The theme for the November/December 2019 issue is “Holidays,” and the deadline is Sept. 1.

Western Humanities Review – open to submissions year round
